Documents you need to open a store account

The exact checklist — ID, proof of income, bank statements and proof of residence — and why each is required.

Documents you need to open a store account

Most South African retailers ask for the same core documents. Have these ready as clear photos or PDFs before you apply and the process takes about ten minutes.

The standard checklist

  • South African ID — green ID book or smart ID card (passport + permit if you're a permanent resident)
  • Proof of income — your latest payslip, or bank statements if self-employed
  • Bank statements — usually the last three months, showing your income
  • Proof of residence — a recent utility bill or similar, typically under three months old
  • Contact details — a working cellphone number and email

No payslip?

If you don't have a payslip, bank statements or an affidavit of income can often stand in. See our no-payslip guide.

Why retailers ask for these

Under the National Credit Act, a retailer must confirm your identity and check you can afford the repayments before granting credit. Your ID proves who you are; the income and bank documents let them run the affordability assessment. Getting them right first time avoids delays and declines.
